Digital water curtain is a technological fountain of the latest generation that combine different elements and devices to make up amazing installations, full of life and with a powerful aesthetic interest. Though these fountains are designed to show graphical contents (images, texts, symbols, etc.), they must not be confused with other fountains where images are projected on spray-water parabolas. In digital water curtains images are created with water jets that are continuously stopped in a synchronized way, generating shapes and silhouettes by mixing water and spaces. Read More
These fountains can be interchangeably installed in outdoor and indoor places, though they are most commonly found outdoors. They are perfect for corporative installations where the company’s logo or monogram can be depicted in a water-and-light set. They are also an excellent solution for shows, events and congresses as they can be carried and installed in different backgrounds.
How do they work?
The system that gives life to these fountains is quite simple, though the technology they use is more complex. Water jets are fed by small nozzles – beside each nozzle there is a fast-acting electrovalve that stops or opens the water jets as needed. In order to control this interrupted flow and achieve a perfect synchronization, the system is governed by complex software (DMX) that controls it in detail. This kind of devices makes it possible to create and program all types of images, making up highly technologically advanced fountains with pinpoint accuracy and a reliable operation.
Digital water curtains are usually accompanied by lighting systems that do not only increase their beauty but let us enjoy them when the lights are out. As a part of the synchronized system, the light is integrated in the distribution pipe that feeds the nozzles with water. The system is a set of elements grouped in modules: each module includes a pipe section with the corresponding nozzles and lights. This way, the software does not only control the electrovalves that interrupt the water flow but also takes care of the lighting. As for the light color, the most common system is RGB as it makes it possible to create every chromatic configuration.
All the options
These attractive fountains can be chosen with different types of installation. In general there are three options: fixed, portable and a combination of the two.
- Fixed Installation – This option is suitable for existing structures such as ponds, framework, walls, etc. The distribution module that provides water can be anchored to the framework or structure, and this must be located over a pond or tank where the submergible pump will be hidden. This type of installation does not need bearing towers.
- Portable Installation – In this case, the digital water curtain includes all the equipment needed for the installation: the bearing elements and the tank that collects the water and contains the pump. Tanks are usually hidden under green walls (with plants) or panels, though they can also be half-buried. On both sides of the tank stand the lifting towers; the towers can also be covered with panels, creating a highly attractive installation. The supporting truss (a tubular structure where the distribution modules for the digital water curtain are anchored) is located on top of the towers.
- Mixed Installation – This option makes it possible to install only one part of the structure: the deposit with the pump or the framework (the truss and the side towers). Of course, this type of installation includes the distribution system and the control software too.
Importance of filtering
As for every fountain (especially those closer to passer-bys and more likely to interact with them), the water must always be in optimal condition. In order to achieve this, digital water curtains usually include a water-treatment system similar to those of swimming pools (with sand filters). Also, the pump often includes a special additional filter. As well as improving the quality of water, these systems also prevent possible obstructions in the fast-acting electrovalves. In fact, these devices are prone to suffer obstructions due to their limited flow passage.
The music of water
A very interesting possibility is including a musical analyzer to coordinate the images with different compositions, so the fountain prints symbols to the beat. The analyzer is part of the system and is in charge of synchronizing the water interruptions with the different notes or musical passages. It is one more option to personalize these astonishing fountains whose design and concept provide an original and modern look: a feature that can never be missing in digital water curtains.
