A modern touch in a lunar landscape

Island of Sal, Republic of Cape Verde. A place that evokes blue skies, white sandy beaches, transparent waters and moments of relax. In April 2016, the locality of Santa Maria of Sal increased its aesthetic and urban interest by the implementation of a passable fountain that creates a landmark in the touristic enclave. The fountain, built by CDM SA with Safe-Rain equipment and technical support, blends in perfectly with the surroundings and provides the appropriate amount of modernity and style. This project stands out in an open outdoor space that also hosts concert and performances, taking advantage of the possibilities provided by the dry fountain. Read More

A 8-kilometer sandy beach

The Island of Sal (or Ille de Sal), given this name for the salt mines which supported a blooming industry over centuries, is part of the archipelago of Cape Verde. Though being of volcanic origin, the island shows a flat surface with a warm and dry climate almost all year long. This climate can be wonderfully enjoyed in the 8-kilometer white sandy beach with turquoise waters that extends along the south-east coast of the island. The locality of Santa Maria de Sal is quite close to this amazing beach; in the beginning, it was just an accommodation area for the salt mines workers. When the industry decayed tourism started to bloom; now it is the main economic activity of the island.

Located only 18 km from the airport, today the city enjoys a peace and calm difficult to find in other popular tourist resorts. It is the perfect place for diving, relaxing and engaging in water sports.

A project, a challenge. The lack of technical solutions

The passable fountain built by CDM SA with Safe-Rain equipment and technical support was a real challenge for both companies. The project involved building a dry or passable fountain in a popular touristic place with a certain lack of specific technical supplies. Safe-Rain had to organize and manage the shipping and transport of the needed equipment, after ensuring that it was the best suited for the conditions of the place. Moreover, the firm sent technicians to Santa Maria of Sal so they started the installation and trained the staff that would be in charge of operating the DMX panel and perform the fountain maintenance operations in the future

An open pool: the heart of the fountain

The solution chosen for this passable fountain was an open pool covering an area of 9 m2, supported by a regulation tank of 15 m3 located near the technical room. The pool provides enough water for 21 jets that reach a maximum height of 2 meters. Each water jet is equipped with a Waterboy PLUS kit with double electro-valve (excusive design and manufacture by Safe-Rain), connected in turn to a DMX-controlled electrical panel. These kits make it possible to program striking water and color features, singular choreographies that turn the dry fountain into a dynamic show by day or night.

Also, Safe-Rain provided the builder with wall bushings, junction boxes and a level probe with electrical panel as additional material. The outcome: a programmable, easy-to-control and reliable system.

Water and light features: everything under control

In order to control the dry fountain water jets and create the water and light features that today turn this place into a real landmark, the fountain in Santa Maria of Sal includes a control panel (DMX) with electrical panel that manages 21 WB PLUS for dynamic fountain, with a 400V 50Hz connection. The lighting is performed by 27W RGB LED crowns, one for each Waterboy PLUS. Both the water and light features are managed by a DMX system.

The fountain also includes a weather vane and a wind management module that make the system even more secure: when the wind speed exceeds a certain threshold, the fountain stops working. This is complemented by the implementation of a probe that controls the water level of the regulation tank, thus ensuring an unfailingly performance at all times.

Technical support, an added value

Safe-Rain contributed to the excellence of the Project by providing the builder with technical support. These were the specific actions:

  • Performance of pump calculations and testing of filtration equipments.
  • Testing of the hydraulic connections dimensioning.
  • Performance of the wire-section calculations and electrical connections for lighting and electro-valves, to the technical room.
  • Design and supply of the control panel.
  • Design and programming of dancing shows.
  • Fountain start-up by a technician (3 days).

A point of urban and cultural interest

Today, the dry fountain of Santa Maria de Sal is a reference point. During the day it is a playful and fresh place for people to enjoy, and by night the fountain gives life to a color and light show that breaks the flat volcanic surface. The programming of cultural events and concerts in the place occupied by the fountain provides this project with special interest.

The dry fountain projected and built in Santa Maria of Sal achieves excellence thanks to the team work that led to its accomplishment, as well as to the equipment and technical solutions developed by Safe-Rain. This fountain is bound to become an icon and landmark in one of the most touristic enclaves in Cape Verde.
